On tuesday afternoon, I will walk into my precinct polling place and give my vote to John Kerry.

Now....I dont hate George Bush...he was my governor for several years...visited my city quite a few times...i had no major problems with him.

But...to be honest....these four years haven't exactly been the best America has seen...I am in no way going to even pretend to be some sort of issue or political expert because i am not....

I am just your average American citizen....concerned with some issues going on these days....not a whole lot of job creation...no economic prosperity....however....i think the main reason i am voting for Kerry is.....images and sounds and photos that I cannot get out of my head...of so many young ppl dying....in a war that we dont even know should have been fought....maybe the battle to get osama I can understand, but not the war in Iraq....is it a war with just cause...or a war a son wanted to finish for his father?

now, please dont start in on me about not supporting the troops...my city has a military base...Strong with support for the troops....with pride for them and compassion for them...there was an 18 year old fresh out of high school here who got killed in an ambush....another one as well a a month or two back...last week, a 20 year old from here lost an eye and is in serious condition at a military hospital up north.....I just ask myself..."Why do we want this to be the norm for the next several years?"....Just hearing about soldiers getting killed everyday....innocent Iraqi civiilians getting killed because they were in the way....virtually every place in the world disrespecting a country they once looked up to and respected....It's all just so sad to me...

I would like to do some wishful thinking and hope that a new president would give us a new sense of direction...a fresh start..something...just something different from what we are experiencing now...

I will not go stark raving mad if George Bush wins again...honestly...if I were to ever get the chance to go up to him...I'd shake his hand out of respect...I still believe you have to respect a President no matter where your party allegiance is....
But....this just cannot go on.....
If electing Kerry means giving the country a new sense of hope and security and direction...then..without a second thought I will giving my vote to him.

A very thought provoking article and a very respectful way of expressing your views....refreshing.
Having said that, I will be casting my vote for George Bush on Tuesday morning. I have a friend that came back from Iraq with a leg missing. He told me he would do it all again because he didn't want his children and mine to one day pay a far greater price and have only us to blame for our complacency. His words really struck a cord with me and invoked images of Kerry's conduct after Vietnam. How he smeared his comrads with charges of war crimes - even as many POW's still endured torture at the hands of the north vietnamese. His so called meetings with the enemy in France as our soldiers continued to die on the battlefield. Since that time, Kerry has done nothing in word or deed to convince me that he's changed his stripes. I do not want my friends noble sacrifice, or any other soldier's for that matter, to be in vain. Does Kerry have the courage and conviction to see that it doesn't? With words like "global test" and "terrorism as a nuisance" I can only believe that he does not.

I respect your opinions though and, like you, hope for better days ahead.

Humorously you come across as far more reasoned, reasonable and understanding of politics than many of the political zealots (like myself) on joeuser. An excellent article that explains why the Centre and the Right should be dissatisfied with their choice of leader.

InBloom, very heart-felt article. I too am casting my vote for John Kerry because President Bush has damaged U.S. credibility so much that only an immediate change in leadership can BEGIN to repair the extensive damage done to our country's reputation and standing in the world. I believe that the soldiers are figting honorably to serve their country and because of that they will never have fought in vain. However, this war has done more to embolden the recruitment of global terrorists than Osama Bin Laden could have ever hoped to achieve on his own. Put simply, the war in Iraq has made the U.S. and world less safe and this administration is too narrowly focued on state sponsors or alleged state sponsors of terrorism at the expense of areas we need to be focused on to truly win this struggle. This administration is also too rigid for the self-analysis required to change course even when the chosen course of action is misguided and wrong. If you are interested in reading more about why I feel the Iraq war has made the U.S. and the world less safe, please feel free to visit my blog. These issues are too important and complex for partisan soundbites. They add no substantive value to the crucial decisions that will need to be made in the months and years ahead.

Congratulations for coming to a thoughtful decision.

and what will you do if he gets elected, and 12 months from now you wake up and nothing has changed?  or worse yet, what will you do if he gets elected, and the terrorists decide to increase attacks on the U.S. due to the fact that our new leader is a wannabe pacifist?

been there.  done that.

in all sincerity, the night after 911, it occured to me that bin laden must have felt allah was really on his side when the 2000 election was finally decided; the article t-bone4justice posted last week (The War Bin Laden Wanted) originally published in the american conservative  virtually echoed my conclusion.
