So this is supposed to be a day when we honor the wonderful men that have led our nation...and I do. But I could not pass up this opportunity to share a list of the Ten Worst Presidential Blunders (according to the University of Louisville's McConnell Center):
I tried to find a link, but no such luck, so here it is:
Number 10:
Clinton’s scandal with Monica Lewinsky (I never looked at a navy dress the same way again).
Number 9:
Ronald Reagan and the Iran Contra Affair--the plan to sell arms to Iran in order to use the dough to help out an anti-communist group in Nicaragua.
Number 8:
Kennedy and the Bay of Pigs, which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Number 7:
Thomas Jefferson and the Embargo act of 1807--” a self imposed prohibition on trade with Europe during the Napoleonic wars.”
Number 6:
James Madison failing to prevent the U.S from becoming part of the War of 1812 with Britain.
Number 5:
Richard Nixon and his involvement with the Watergate fiasco.
Number 4:
Woodrow Wilson refusing to compromise on the Treat of Versailles after WW1.
Number 3:
Lyndon Johnson’s failure to keep the Vietnam war from Intensifying.
Number 2:
Andrew Johnson’s decision after the Civil War to take sides with Southern Whites
(and then being against improving justice for southern blacks beyond abolishing slavery).
And the Number 1 spot goes to:
President James Buchanan, for “failing to avert” the Civil War. Scholars generally agreed that he did not do enough to oppose efforts by southern states to secede from the union before the civil war.
I am sure people some might differ on opinion as to who belongs in what spot (or if a a certain incident even belongs in the top ten).
